Learning Cross-Country Paragliding in Roldanillo: What a Week at Eagle Paragliding Actually Looks Like

One week, zero XC experience, 30+ km flights

I'd been flying paragliders for a couple years before Roldanillo, but always at the same sites, doing the same thing — launch, ridge soar, land. Cross-country was this other category entirely. Pilots would talk about reading thermals, flying 50 km in an afternoon, and I'd nod along like I understood what that actually meant. I didn't. So I signed up for Eagle Paragliding's week-long XC clinic in Colombia's Valle del Cauca, showed up in January with zero cross-country flights to my name, and left with 30+ kilometer days behind me. The gap between those two versions of my flying is the most compressed skill jump I've experienced in any sport.

Why Roldanillo, and Why January

Roldanillo works for XC the way a wind tunnel works for aerodynamics — the geography does half the teaching. The town sits at about 1,000 meters in a valley between the Western and Central Cordillera ranges, and those parallel mountain walls funnel wind patterns into remarkably predictable thermal cycles. By mid-morning, the sun heats the valley floor unevenly — dark agricultural fields, exposed rock faces, asphalt roads — and columns of warm air start peeling off the surface. You can watch them if you know what to look for: dust devils at the base, hawks circling without flapping, cumulus clouds building flat on the bottom and puffy on top.

January and February are the season. Thermals fire reliably from about 10:30 AM until 4 PM, with the strongest lift between noon and 2. Outside those months, conditions get inconsistent — rain disrupts the thermal cycle, wind patterns shift, and the valley loses the predictability that makes it such a good classroom. During peak season, Roldanillo fills up with pilots from all over the world. You'll hear Portuguese, German, French, and Korean at the launch site before you hear Spanish.

What Eagle Paragliding Actually Teaches

The clinic runs about $3,000 for the week, which puts it at the expensive end of paragliding instruction. But here's what that buys you: a curriculum that compresses what most pilots spend a full season figuring out into seven days of structured progression.

The core of it breaks down into four skills that build on each other. First, reading the landscape — learning to look at a valley and predict where thermals will trigger based on terrain, sun angle, and surface type. A freshly plowed field absorbs heat differently than a forest canopy. A south-facing rocky slope fires earlier than a grassy one. This isn't theory. You learn it in the air, with an instructor on the radio saying "look left, see that darker patch of ground? Fly toward it" — and then feeling the wing surge upward when you get there.

Second, coring. Once you find a thermal, you have to stay in it. Thermals aren't smooth columns of air — they're turbulent, shifting, sometimes broken into pieces. The variometer on your instrument panel beeps faster as you climb, slower as you drift out of lift. Learning to core means learning to turn tighter toward the strongest beeping, shifting your circle's center as the thermal drifts downwind. It's physical — you're pulling brake, weighting one side of the harness, making constant micro-corrections. Early on it felt like trying to balance on a moving surface. By the end of the week it felt like a conversation with the air.

Third, understanding thermal structure. Why thermals pulse. Why they sometimes split into multiple cores. Why the lift gets smoother as you climb higher and the thermal organizes. This is the stuff that turns reactive flying into anticipatory flying — instead of chasing the beep, you start predicting where the lift will be two turns from now.

Fourth, gaggle flying. When eight pilots are circling in the same thermal, there are rules. Who has priority, how to enter an occupied thermal, how to signal your intentions. The first time I flew in a crowded thermal, it was genuinely unnerving — six or seven wings banking in a tight circle, everyone at slightly different altitudes, the air already turbulent from the thermal itself. You're making constant visual checks, adjusting your turn radius, trying not to drift into someone else's arc while also trying to stay in the strongest lift. It's controlled chaos until you learn the rhythm of it. This matters more than you'd think. Some of the best thermals during the clinic had that many wings in them, and the skill of flying efficiently in a group is a separate discipline from finding and coring thermals alone.

How the Week Actually Felt

Day one was humbling. I launched off a ridge above town, immediately hit sink, and spent the next twenty minutes scratching along the ridge trying not to end up in the landing field below. The thermal indicators the instructor had pointed out on the ground — the dust, the hawks — were invisible from the air when I was focused on not losing altitude. I landed after forty minutes having gained maybe 200 meters above launch. Other pilots in the clinic were doing the same thing. Nobody was going cross-country yet.

By day three, something shifted. It wasn't in the air — it was in a debrief. The instructor broke down a flight I'd just done, pointing out thermals I'd flown through without recognizing them, explaining what the terrain below had been telling me that I'd missed. Something about hearing it described after the fact, matched against what I'd actually felt in the harness, made the pattern click. The next morning I started catching thermals I would have flown straight through on day one. Not because I'd suddenly developed some sixth sense, but because the pattern recognition was starting to work. Dark field, sun angle, wind direction — the variables were combining into instinct rather than a checklist.

The late-week flights were different animals. Two hours in the air, 30+ kilometers from launch, watching the valley scroll underneath at 2,000 meters. The anxiety of the early days — am I going to sink out? where's the next thermal? — had been replaced by something closer to strategic thinking. I could see the route ahead, identify likely thermal sources along it, and make decisions about when to stop climbing and push forward. The strangest part was the moment I left terrain I recognized. You're high enough that the valley looks like a map, and at some point you realize you've flown past anything familiar. No backup plan except the skills you've been drilling all week. It's a particular kind of commitment — you can't just turn around and glide back to the field you launched from. You're going somewhere you've never been, trusting the air and the pattern recognition to get you there.

The Town Between Flights

Roldanillo is small. That's part of what makes it work — there's nothing to do but fly, eat, and debrief, which is exactly the right structure for learning something intensive. The pilot community takes over the town during season, so you're eating dinner with the same people you were circling thermals with that afternoon.

Food-wise, there's a small empanada spot (4.410434, -76.155855) that I ended up going to almost every day. I don't know what they do differently — maybe it's the filling, maybe it's the frying — but they're genuinely the best empanadas I've had in Colombia, and I've eaten a lot of empanadas in Colombia. Oven Pizza operates out of someone's backyard and shouldn't work as well as it does. The pizza is legitimately good, not just "good for a small Colombian town" good. Beyond those two, standard Colombian fare — rice, beans, plantains, grilled meat — at small restaurants and street stands. Nothing fancy. Cheap and solid.

If you have a free day or want to extend the trip, Guatapé is worth the detour — completely different vibe, but one of Colombia's best day trips. And if you're basing out of Medellín before or after, that's a natural pairing since most international flights route through there anyway.

The $3,000 Question

Is it worth it? For me, yes — and I don't say that about most expensive things. The math is straightforward: you can spend a season or two at your home site trying to figure out XC on your own, or you can compress that learning into a week with instructors who've logged thousands of XC hours in one of the best thermal environments on the planet. The clinic doesn't just teach you how to find thermals. It teaches you how to think about flying differently — to read a landscape, plan a route, manage risk in the air.

The people matter too. Everyone in my clinic was US-based, but the skill range was wide — some had been flying for years and just never pushed into XC, others were newer and more ambitious than experienced. That mix actually worked well. The more experienced pilots modeled good technique in the air, and the newer ones asked the dumb questions that turned out not to be dumb at all. The shared intensity of learning something hard in a compressed week creates bonds that regular flying doesn't. Several of us stayed in touch afterward, and having a network of people at the same XC stage makes progression after the clinic faster.

If you're still at the ridge-soaring stage and cross-country feels like a different sport — it is, a little. But the gap is smaller than it looks, and Roldanillo is probably the fastest way to close it.
